Just come home from this restaurant. All i can say is that it was an extremely disappointing experience - particularly since I have been wanting to come to this restaurant for about 2 years. I feel so disappointed that i am compelled to post a review about this rip-off place on at least 5 websites!
I went with my friend for a 6:30pm booking. I too experienced the blonde lady! Polite but not the best telephone manner! Anyhoo when we went inside it was very much empty which was a bit of a surprise because I thought everybody went here! The decor was really nice. When the menu came, my friend and i were a little surprised by the short 1-page of main dishes and the £7.50 desserts. There really wasn't much variety at all compared to other Caribbean restaurants. My friend ordered ackee and saltfish (£15.95) and I ordered a vegetable curry thing (£9.95). I was soon told that my curry did not come with rice and peas so i would have to order this separately as a side dish for £4.50. I ordered a drink called Sorrel for £3.50. My pretty waitress returned asked me if I wanted a little rum in my Sorrell. I don't even drink but since I felt happy and excited to finally be experiencing this restaurant I thought I 'd live on the wild side!!
Cutting to the chase - my friend's ackee and saltish came with no hardfood at all. The waitress later said that has mentioned that there was no hardfood but we never heard this. What on earth was my friend supposed to eat the ackee with???? Also the macceronni cheese dish (£4.50) was a tiny slice coated in layers and layers of cheese. My friend couldn't finish it. My vegetable curry burnt the roof of my mouth (possibly my fault for being too fast). It wasn't a soup but it wasn't as runny as water either - i don't know what kind of vegetable thing it was to be honest. All I know is that I tried to mix my rice and peas and plantin with it to soak up all the sauce; but as i type now i'm actually feeling sick from all the coconut that was swimming within it.
Basically there was a lot of food left over and two very disappointed girls at the table. We are not fussy by any means. It's just that this place is trying to do some gourmet style thing to Caribbean food and you know what - IT JUST DOESN'T WORK!!!
To add insult to injury when I checked over the bill, my Sorrell had actually come to £6.50. They had increased it by £3 because I had said I wanted the rum in it but the waitress had never mentioned this at the time!!! I didn't want to look like an aggressive cheapskate so i didn't complain but boy do i regret not saying anything! Our meal in total came to £48.50. Our voucher - which the waitress originally forgot to utilise - brought the price down to £38.50.
I'm so upset because I really had high expectations for this place but the small portions, overpriced, rich and weird tasting, bland food was very sad indeed. I'm just thankful i never dragged my parents here for their birthday.
I decided to try Caribbean Scene, Victoria Docks on my partner's birthday - she being Jamaican, I thought it would really hit the spot! We booked a table for six family members including 3 children for the evening.
The restaurant was practically empty when we arrived at 8.00 p.m. so I had high hopes for a good service,
The setting and ambience looked so promising with a good sax musician and female singer setting the relaxed mood. Unfortunately the service was painfully slow and when the food arrived it was tepid and although I did not wish to say anything because of the occasion my partner would not eat the ox tail because it was nt hot.
